COVID Has Been Exhausting … Is It Truly Over?

We don’t want to cause alarm, yet we see that more COVID variants are emerging. Omicron-BA.2, a subvariant of the original Omicron variant that swept through in early 2022, is taking over other countries and rapidly spreading throughout the US.

For weeks, case numbers in the US have been falling, and more states and stores are ‘reopening for business.’

Yet we remain wary in case there is another surge as more people return toward normalcy and strict travel and other restrictions are lifted. With most areas having lifted their mask mandates, this change in behaviors will only increase the spread of the new variant.

  • Several European countries — such as Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom — have reported a spike in COVID-19 over the last couple of weeks.
  • For the week ending March 11, the Omicron-BA.2 variant made up 23% of all COVID cases in the US, compared to 7% of all cases for the week ending February 26, according to the CDC.
  • Although the original Omicron variant still makes up the majority of America’s COVID infections, its prevalence has dropped over the same period, from 75% to 66%, the CDC reports.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, said that given the growing prevalence of the highly infectious BA.2, he expects COVID cases will increase within the next month.
